How I breathe a sigh of relief when I get to this page as I know the end is in sight and the printer will be happy that I have met the deadline. I enjoy doing this newsletter but would find it very difficult without the help of people like Jennifer of JSP Media who lets me have some of the press releases. I really wish that more people would put pen to paper and tell us about their dogs and their experiences as I am sure there is an untapped mine of information out there that would be good to share with others. Do think about it for the next one in February 2025.
As full members of the Association of Dog & Cat Homes we have to prove that our standard of welfare is of the highest calibre. To this end we are inspected every so often and this September it was our turn. Karen, our Chairman of Trustees and I were subjected to a barrage of questions by one of the examining Trustees of the ADCH. Questions ranged from our records and policies to what the dogs in our care were fed and to an inspection of our kennels. I am delighted to tell you that we have passed with a 98% record. The only item subject to review is that we need to have in writing, a policy in relation to puppies in foster, their care, training and treatment. This is the only thing that is missing from our Guidelines and is easily remedied.
These inspections are very important for us to retain our membership and to show the public that our operation is of the highest standard. I foresee in the future that all rescues will be required to be licensed and that this type of inspection will have to be complied with. This is a good move and hopefully will take out some of the illegal dog and puppy dealers who try and operate as a bone fide rescue organisation. In the future we can but hope that people looking for a rescue dog will only obtain them from licensed organisations.
As a rescue we are very concerned at the amount of dogs coming in that have been abandoned. The summer holidays this year have seen a marked increase in dogs being taken to remote places and dumped. They have in the most part been chipped but these have not been registered and it makes it impossible for us and the Environmental Services to find the owners. I think the time has come that the implanters of chips MUST point out to owners that they have to register the chip with a database, preferably Petlog.
As a Trust we are just coming up to our 30th Anniversary and I am sure that we will have some celebrations next year to mark this so lets make it a very special year. Can anyone think of an item i.e. a special logo for clothing or other items. We will be having some nice pens which we will give to every member with their next newsletter as a little gift from us.
Finally, on a personal note I would like to thank all our Trustees and helpers for their dedication and hard work during the past year. Bramley and Harry join with me in wishing you and your family a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New year. Anne
